Tata Steel has set up three rehabilitation and resettlement colonies as well as five transit camps at Kalinganagar for the relocated families and maintained a concerted focus on their happiness and security. The initiatives under the 'Tata Steel Parivar' programme go beyond the provisions of a stipulated R&R Policy and aims to give a new life and to all its members by fulfilling their aspirations. The delivery modules at Kalinganagar have been appropriately designed to ensure that R&R issues are effectively dealt with. Therefore, the programme is dynamic and has various events being organised on a regular basis in order to charter a consistent route of growth.

An outline of recent events and other programmes organised in Kalinganagar by Tata Steel

Grievance Redressal Group (GRG) Team visits Gobarghati Tata Steel Parivar Colony

The Grievance Redressal Group (GRG), an independent body headed by retired Director General of Police (DGP), Mr. Amiya Bhusan Tripathy with Padmashree Smt. Tulasi Munda and renowned social activist Mr. A.V. Swamy as members, visited the Tata Steel Parivar colony at Gobarghati. Mr. R K Singh, Head (R & R), Orissa Project of Tata Steel, Mrs. Nandini Sarangi, Sankar Soren and other officials accompanied the team.

The Grievance Redressal Group comprising eminent personalities of Orissa has been constituted to render useful advice on re-working the rehabilitation and re-settlement (R&R) approaches to improve the benefits to Tata Steel Parivar families in Kalinganagar and also people living in the s peripheral villages.

The state owned Orissa Mining Corporation (OMC), FACOR and IMFA also contributed to the cause. A total of 514 patients were examined and treated free of cost. Some critical cases were referred to Sukinda Chromite Mine Hospital for further treatment and are to be management through TSRDS. Most of the medicines required for the camp were provided by Orissa Police while TSRDS & OMC contributed some of it. A cultural programme featuring tribal dance competition was held on this occasion.

GRG would report on the developmental activities as well as on the grievances of people living in different rehabilitation colonies, to the management of Tata Steel so that necessary interventions can be undertaken on the basis of the feedback received. The highlights of the team’s visit have been discussed below -

  • The team first visited the Gobarghati Transit Camp and witnessed the Balwadi classes being conducted there. They were appreciative of the efforts of Tata Steel in educating the children of displaced families by the women from their own communities.
  • They were also happy to see that the traditional tribal art form ‘Soura Painting’ was being taught to ladies of the displaced families by professional trainers. Padmashree Smt. Tulasi Munda also enquired about the well-being of the people staying in the camp.
  • From the Gobarghati Transit Camp, the team went to the Gobarghati Colony where they were impressed by the attempts that are being taken to develop a nursery, which would help in plantation development in the entire Kalinganagar area. Interestingly, Smt. Munda was so excited with the variety of plants that she wished to take some of these to her Ashram. They also interacted with those people who are engaged in this garden and are capable of earning their livelihood.
  • While visiting the stone carving unit run by a specialist stone carver in the colony all the members of the GRG were thoroughly surprised to find the beautiful artifacts designed by the women of Tata Steel Parivar colonies.
  • The GRG team also visited the Tata Steel Parivar hospital at Gobarghati, which is now almost complete. Mr. Tripathy, after witnessing the 200-bedded Hospital pointed out that Tata Steel is well ahead in its mission to ensure overall development of the community.
  • After visiting the community recreation centre located at Gobarghati, Mr. Tripathy said that Tata Steel is giving a new lease life to the people after displacement. Starting from education to art & culture, these people are involved in a lot of activities. They can now even build their own houses.

Smt. Munda was very pleased after her trip and is of the opinion that there has been a sea change in the condition of the people in the rehabilitation colony in a very short span of time.
